Ce film est la quête d’une danse du Kérala, en Inde du Sud, exclusivement pratiquée par des femmes, le Mohini Attam. Nous suivons trois maîtres livrant l’assise de leur art à leurs disciples, dans un profond respect, en alternance avec les interprétations de plusieurs danseuses. C’est un peu le cycle de l’existence d’une danseuse dévouée à son art qui est saisi à travers ces images avec deux figures archétypales qui se dessinent, celle du maître quel qu’il soit et celle de la jeune fille, comme deux temps possibles de la vie. Mais ce qui compte derrière le particulier, c’est ce qui accède à l’universel. Derrière l’homme, se cache le dieu ; derrière la femme, l’héroïne… Ce qui ressort, in fine, c’est le lien intime et puissant de la danse, du chant et de la vie.

This film is a quest for a dance from Kerala, South India, practiced exclusively by women, Mohini Attam. We follow three masters delivering the foundation of their art to their disciples, in a profound respect, alternating with the interpretations of several dancers. It is a bit the cycle of the existence of a dancer devoted to her art which is seized through these images with two archetypal figures which take shape, that of the master whoever he is and that of the young girl, like two possible times of the life. But what counts behind the particular is what reaches the universal. Behind the man, the god is hidden; behind the woman, the heroine… What emerges, in fine, is the intimate and powerful link between dance, song and life.
